  • What are link farms ? How do I know that I do not have back links from link farms ?

You might have read several times that getting links from linkfarms is bad. There is a wide spread belief that a site which has too many outbound links is considered a linkfarm. There is another one too, that site with too many inbound links are called link farms. This is not true, as otherwise sites like wikipedia and dmoz will also become linkfarms. It is therefore difficult to identify if you are unknowingly getting a link from what the search engines consider a link farm. Typical characteristics of link farms are :

– Several outbound links per page, typically over 50.

– Uncategorized link structure. Instead of categorizing the links based on the site content, there would be links on the same page whose site content is no way related to each other.

– Another definition of linkfarm is a group of sites that link to each other. This way, you could have unknowingly created a link farm yourself, since if you have several websites, it is a natural temptation to link to all the sites from all the sites.

  • What are spam sites ? How do I know that they do not link to me ?

Spam sites, quite simply, are sites that spread spam. It can be in the form of virus, abuse or anything that is not wanted and / or expected by the visitor. It is a wrong belief that pornography, casinos and pharmacy sites are spam. Somebody who is visiting a casino knows what to expect, so how can it be considered spam ? You may not link to them considering that their content is not relevant to yours, but considering them as spam is incorrect understanding of the meaning of ’spam’. Coming back, getting a link from spam site can be harmful for your sites’s seo. Typical characteristics of a spammy site are :

– Too many advertisements. You practically cannot segregate content from ads.

– An overdose of pop-ups of either ads or telling visitors to visit other site sections or other sites.

– Your anti-virus gives you a warning when you try to visit the site.

– A socially-safe url which gets directed to a site with socially-abusive content.

– A very long domain name and / or several dashes in the domain. eg the-best-search-engine-optimization-company.com (don’t visit this, it’s a dummy url). Long domain name does not necessary mean spam, but it is wise to double check such sites.

  • What are spam links ? How do I know that I do not have one ?

Spam links are links on your site that are not wanted. Unless you’ve been hacked, you won’t have this problem. An extended meaning of spam links is that the linking anchor text of outbound links are not representative of their site’s content. In common practice, the anchor text is usually decided by the link partner; before agreeing to that, make sure that that text gels with its site content.

  • I have exchanged links with sites which are not relevant to my site, will it harm my seo ?

While relevant inbound links are good for your site, it is a wide spread belief that links that are not relevant are bad. Unless the sites that Link Building to you are link farms or spammy or it somehow violates a webmaster guideline, there is no reason to think that it will harm your site. For the simple reason that in real world, you have no control over who links to you. For example you may have a hospital site to which somebody in a webmaster forum may link to saying that it is a good site design – you just got a link from non-relevant site, but don’t worry, it won’t harm you. At best, it will help your site seo; at worst, it will be ignored.
